Program Information

Hailed as “thrillingly powerful” by The New York Times and “a major talent” by The Toronto Star, Marcus Nance is one of North America’s most compelling and versatile performers. Equally at home in opera, musical theatre, film, and cabaret, he brings exceptional vocal authority, dramatic presence, and emotional depth to every stage he inhabits. A two-time Dora Award winner (2024, 2025) and recipient of the 2025 Toronto Theatre Critics’ Award, Marcus was also named My Entertainment World’s 2023 Performer of the Year, praised as “one of Canada’s greatest musical theatre talents.”

Recent stage credits include “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812” (Mirvish / Crow’s Theatre / Musical Stage Company), “A Strange Loop” (Soulpepper), “The Little Prince” (Pacific Opera Victoria), “Cymbeline,” “Frankenstein Revived,” and “Richard II” (Stratford Festival), as well as “H.M.S. Pinafore” with Vancouver Opera. His Broadway credits include “Jesus Christ Superstar” and Baz Luhrmann’s Tony Award-winning production of “La Bohème.”

A longtime member of the Stratford Festival company, Marcus has spent twelve seasons performing leading roles and earning critical acclaim for portrayals such as the Monster in “Frankenstein Revived,” Caiaphas in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Jupiter in “Cymbeline,” Queequeg in “Moby Dick,” and Reverend J.D. Montgomery in “My One and Only.” In 2021, he created, directed, and performed in “Why We Tell the Story,” which launched the Stratford Festival’s outdoor season. His deeply personal solo work, “Voice of a Preacher’s Son,” premiered on Stratfest@Home, the Festival’s digital streaming platform.

In opera, Marcus is celebrated for his commanding bass voice, formidable dramatic presence, and distinguished work in the creation of new repertoire. He originated three roles in world-premiere productions: Moses in “Beatrice Chancy” (Queen of Puddings Music Theatre), Malcolm in Atom Egoyan’s “Elsewhereless” (Tapestry Opera), for which he received a Dora Award nomination, and bass soloist in the Juno Award-nominated “Dark Star Requiem” (Tapestry Opera). Additional operatic highlights include Sparafucile in “Rigoletto” (Tacoma Opera), the Compère in “Four Saints in Three Acts” (Chicago Opera Theatre), Basilio in “The Barber of Seville” (Monterey Opera Association), and Ali in “L’Italiana in Algeri” (Hawai‘i Opera Theatre).

On screen, Marcus made his feature film debut in Mel Brooks’ “The Producers” and has appeared in “Queen Tut,” “Murdoch Mysteries,” “Good Sam,” “Departure,” and “Mayday.”

Beyond his performing career, Marcus is a passionate educator, mentor, and advocate for the next generation of artists. He teaches voice at Wilfrid Laurier University, Sheridan College, and the Stratford Summer Music Vocal Academy, and regularly leads masterclasses and adjudicates festivals throughout Canada and the United States. His teaching philosophy centres on cultivating versatile, fearless artists, singers who are technically grounded, stylistically flexible, and committed to authentic storytelling across all genres of music.

Marcus also served on the International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT) 2025 Program Committee and was invited to perform in the conference’s opening ceremonies.

Marcus Nance is a proud member of CAEA, ACTRA, and NATS.

Carl Philippe Gionet, piano

Carl Philippe Gionet is a pianist and multidisciplinary artist. Whether as a soloist, collaborative pianist, or pedagogue, Carl is in high demand, mainly in Europe and Canada. He completed his doctorate in piano performance at the Université de Montréal under the direction of Paul Stewart. He has received specialized training in collaborative piano in Austria and England, and participated in numerous prestigious international summer programs. This drove her to create Inter Arts Matrix, a charitable arts organization and home for the creation of interdisciplinary work. One of the first of its kind in Canada, Anne-Marie grew the organization into one of Canada’s most innovative incubators. Today, she retains a close link as an I.A.M. Associate Artist.

John Sobol, poet

John Sobol is a writer, performance poet, musician and media specialist whose work spans literature, spoken word, theatre, music and digital culture. His career reflects a longstanding interest in storytelling, communication and the relationship between oral traditions and contemporary media.

As a writer, Sobol has published seven books, including his most recent, “Born” (Groundwood Press), along with hundreds of articles in publications such as Canadian Geographic, BorderCrossings, Shambhala Sun and Downbeat. His books “Digitopia Blues: Race, Technology and the American Voice” and “You Are Your Media: Making Sense of the 21st Century” explore the influence of communication technologies on culture and society.

An accomplished performance poet and saxophonist, Sobol has given more than 1,000 performances in a dozen countries since 1979. He has travelled extensively to study, record and perform with artists and elders representing diverse oral traditions. He also created Canada’s largest spoken word gathering at The Banff Centre for the Arts and co-curated the Monologue/Dialogue performance art festival.

His writing extends to television, theatre and opera. He has written scripts for numerous television productions, including the animated “Pippi Longstocking” series and the documentary “The Genius of Lenny Breau.” He also wrote the libretti for two large-scale multimedia operas, “The Salome Dancer” and “MyAudia,” and toured an acclaimed solo performance, “Two Million Years of Technology.”

Sobol has also worked as a story producer for CBC national radio and operated his own record label, Word of Mouth, releasing music by artists including the McGarrigle Sisters, Sheila Jordan and Steve Lacy. His work in digital media includes leadership roles at the Canada Council for the Arts and the Design Exchange.

Michael Donovan, composer, co-producer

Michael Donovan is a musician’s composer with a mastery of tonal language. Known for his lush harmonies and textures, his works offer immersive experiences to diverse audiences. And his tonal language is a fusion developed through early saxophone and piano studies in jazz and classical music.

There’s a common thread that runs through his collaborations with living poets and librettists: a deep ecological concern and exploration of the human connection to the natural world.

Over the last decade, a string of his vocal works have enjoyed world premieres, including chamber operas, song cycles, chamber music, and an upcoming oratorio.

For a decade, Donovan lived and studied in Germany and was immersed in the Romantic Art Song tradition. There he was mentored by some of the greatest Lieder singers of all time, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Brigitte Fassbaender. Inspired by the rapprochement with nature in German Romanticism, Donovan’s PhD in Musicology has brought a deep-ecological lens to the poetic settings of Franz Schubert.

This nature-centric approach is reflected in his works such as “Schubertnow: The Journey Outward” (Toronto 2016, Numus Ontario 2021), “Ode to a Nightingale” (John Keats) (Toronto 2018), the chamber opera “Memories Beyond the Grave” (Upstream, Halifax, 2023, Open Ears, Ontario, 2025), the chamber opera “Caroline’s Sweeper” (Open Waters Fest 2026), and “Songs by Animals” (Cecilia Concerts 2026).

Also in 2026, Donovan released “A Chateaubriand Collection,” a record of excerpts from the opera “Memories Beyond the Grave.”

Donovan is currently collaborating on a secular oratorio with Canadian poet Sue Goyette titled “Oh Grand Breath of Us All.”

“Often, I’m finding the mood or the essence of the ambience before I ever write a melody.” – Michael Donovan

» – Michael Donovan
